One-Week Workshop on Theatre

The Drama Club, Faculty of Humanities, Social Sciences and Liberal Arts (FHSSLA), in collaboration with the Department of English, Sikkim Manipal University, organised a One-Week Workshop on Theatre from 1st to 6th November 2025. The workshop aimed to foster creativity, teamwork, and artistic expression among students while introducing them to the fundamentals of stage performance, acting, and direction.

The sessions were conducted by Mr Ravi Kumar, Research Scholar, Department of Hindi, Sikkim University. Mr Kumar is a professional theatre artist and the founding member and Director of the Sikkim University Drama Club. Since 2017, he has been actively involved in theatrical performances, direction, and student training. The workshop was convened by Ms Priyanka Sharma, Assistant Professor, Department of English, FHSSLA.

A total of 35 participants attended the workshop, including students from:

  • Sikkim Manipal University
  • Sikkim University
  • Nar Bahadur Bhandari Degree College

The workshop was held daily from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. and incorporated both practical and theoretical learning experiences. The sessions focused on various aspects of theatre and performance, including:

  • Body language and movement
  • Voice modulation and articulation
  • Stage presence and confidence building
  • Improvisation techniques
  • Character development and portrayal

The inaugural session on 1st November 2025 commenced with a welcome address delivered by Dr Madan Chhetri, Coordinator, FHSSLA, followed by the introduction and felicitation of the Resource Person. The workshop progressed through a series of interactive exercises, collaborative activities, and group performances, culminating in presentations and reflective discussions on the final day.

The workshop received enthusiastic participation and positive feedback from students. Participants gained a hands-on understanding of performance dynamics, enhanced their self-expression and confidence, and developed an appreciation for the discipline and creativity involved in theatrical practice. The sessions also encouraged teamwork, empathy, and effective communication while strengthening the university’s culture of performing arts.

The One-Week Workshop on Theatre successfully achieved its objectives of introducing students to theatre as both an art form and a medium of learning. The dedication of the Resource Person, the support extended by the university administration, and the enthusiasm of the participants contributed significantly to the success of the programme.
