Mass Health Awareness on Substance Abuse
On 18th October 2025, the 7th
Semester B.Sc. Nursing and 2nd Year M.Sc. Nursing students from
Sikkim Manipal College of Nursing (SMCON), organized a Mass Health Awareness
Programme on the topic “Substance Abuse and its Prevention” at Panchayat
Bhawan, Rumtek, Sikkim. The main objective for organizing the program was - to
educate the public, especially adolescents and youth, about the physical,
psychological, and social consequences of substance abuse and to strengthen
community involvement and responsibility in preventing and managing substance
abuse. Around 60 people from community attended the programme. Students
provided health talk on substance abuse discussing about its different types
and its ill effects, causes, identification of substance abuser, complications,
prevention and management with help of multiple attractive audio-visual aids.
Students also emphasized on roles and responsibilities of community people in
preventing substance abuse in their locality and made them aware about the
initiatives taken at National and State level to combat this issue. At the end,
a quiz session was held to evaluate the knowledge of the audience and to obtain
the program feedback. Additionally, Mr. Nima Gyalpo Bhutia, Village
Administrative Assistant, Rumtek enlightened the gathering on this social issue
in community and how community participation is important in preventing such
type of burning issue of our society. Overall,
the programme ended with a meaningful message to the society.
