PROGRAMME REPORT

The First Year M.Sc. Nursing students from the Departments of Community Health Nursing and Child Health Nursing, Sikkim Manipal College of Nursing (SMCON), organized a School Health Awareness Programme on 26th February 2026 at Tiny Tots School, IBM, Rangpo. The programme focused on the important health topics of Menstrual Hygiene, Nipah Virus, and the Effects of Prolonged Screen Time. A total of 60 students from Classes VI to VIII participated in the awareness programme.

The programme commenced with a welcome address by the Master of Ceremonies, followed by the felicitation of the distinguished guests and dignitaries. The dignitaries included Mr. Ajit Sharma, Principal, Tiny Tots School, IBM, Rangpo; Prof. Ranjita Devi, Vice Principal and Head of the Department of Community Health Nursing, SMCON; and Mrs. S. Nandarani Devi, Assistant Professor, Department of Child Health Nursing, SMCON.

The nursing students conducted interactive educational sessions on menstrual hygiene, emphasizing the management of symptoms during menstruation, the importance of maintaining personal hygiene, the correct use and disposal of sanitary pads, and the need to challenge and overcome common myths and taboos associated with menstruation. The session aimed to promote awareness and encourage healthy practices among adolescent students.

Awareness was also provided regarding Nipah Virus infection, including its causes, signs and symptoms, modes of transmission, preventive measures, and the importance of seeking timely medical care. The session highlighted the role of community awareness in preventing the spread of infectious diseases and promoting public health.

In addition, a session on healthy screen time habits was conducted, focusing on the adverse effects of excessive use of mobile phones and electronic gadgets. Students were educated about issues such as eye strain, sleep disturbances, reduced physical activity, and poor academic performance resulting from prolonged screen exposure. They were encouraged to maintain a healthy balance between studies, physical activities, recreation, and responsible digital use.

The awareness sessions were made engaging and interactive through demonstrations, posters, and open discussions. Students actively participated by asking questions and clarifying their doubts, thereby enhancing their understanding of the topics discussed.

The programme concluded with valuable feedback from the school authorities, who appreciated the efforts of the nursing students in organizing an informative and meaningful awareness programme for the school community. The initiative was recognized as a significant contribution towards promoting health education among adolescents.

The programme ended on a positive note, strengthening the bond between the nursing students and the school community while promoting awareness about menstrual hygiene, infectious disease prevention, and healthy lifestyle practices among young students.
