PROGRAMME REPORT
On 12th March 2026, the 8th Semester B.Sc. Nursing students of Sikkim Manipal College of Nursing (SMCON) organized a School Health Awareness Programme at New Horizon Academy, IBM Colony, Rangpo, Sikkim. The programme focused on three important health topics: Prevention of Accidents, Food Poisoning, and Personal Hygiene. A total of 126 students from Classes I to V and 8 teaching staff members participated in the awareness programme.
The programme commenced with a welcome address delivered by the Master of Ceremonies, followed by the felicitation of Mr. Dheeraj Pradhan, Principal, New Horizon Academy. The event aimed to promote health awareness among young school children by equipping them with essential knowledge and practical skills related to safety, hygiene, and disease prevention.
The nursing students delivered an informative health talk on the prevention of accidents, discussing various types of accidents commonly encountered by children, preventive measures to minimize risks, and appropriate safety practices to be followed after accidental exposure. The session emphasized the importance of vigilance and adopting safe behaviours in both home and school environments.
Another session focused on food poisoning, recognized as one of the most common forms of poisoning among children. The school students and teachers were educated about the causes, signs and symptoms of food poisoning, and the step-by-step management of affected individuals. The session highlighted the significance of safe food handling practices and timely medical intervention.
The students of SMCON also conducted an engaging session on personal hygiene, emphasizing its importance in maintaining health and preventing diseases. Demonstrations on proper handwashing techniques, correct tooth brushing methods, and the adoption of healthy daily habits were carried out using attractive audio-visual aids to enhance understanding and retention among the young audience.
To reinforce the key messages delivered during the awareness sessions, the nursing students performed a dance focusing on the theme of personal hygiene, making the learning process both enjoyable and memorable for the children. The innovative approach effectively captured the attention of the students and encouraged active participation.
A quiz session was subsequently conducted to assess the students' understanding of the topics discussed. Small tokens of appreciation were distributed to students who participated enthusiastically and answered the questions correctly, thereby motivating them to continue practicing healthy behaviours.
During the feedback session, Mr. Dheeraj Pradhan, Principal, New Horizon Academy, emphasized the relevance of the topics covered and appreciated the initiative undertaken by the nursing students. He commended the hard work and dedication demonstrated by the organizing team and expressed his gratitude to the tutors, Ms. Priya Gurung and Mrs. Shrada Pradhan, for their guidance and efforts in extending valuable health education to the school and the wider community.
The programme concluded successfully with positive feedback from the school authorities. The initiative proved to be both informative and impactful, enhancing awareness among children regarding accident prevention, food safety, and personal hygiene while strengthening the collaborative relationship between SMCON and the community in promoting health and well-being.
