Summit Sikkim 9.0: Three Days of Diplomacy, Dialogue, and Discovery

The Sikkim Manipal Institute of Technology Model United Nations (SMITMUN), popularly known as Summit Sikkim 9.0, was held from 10th to 12th October 2025, marking yet another successful chapter in the institution’s commitment to fostering diplomacy, debate, and youth leadership. The event brought together delegates, Executive Board members, and organizers from across the country to engage in meaningful discussions on pressing global issues.

Day 1: Inauguration, Committee Kickoff, and Gala Evening

The grand inauguration ceremony on Day Zero set the tone for an unforgettable experience. The event was graced by Professor (Dr.) Savita G. Kini, Director and Chief Guest of the conference, and Professor (Dr.) Pankaj Chettri, Associate Director (Student Affairs), as well as the Guest of Honour, Mr. Gurudath Kini. Their words of encouragement underscored the importance of fostering global awareness, critical thinking, and youth engagement in policymaking.

The ceremony was marked by a beautifully curated cultural program presented by the students of SMIT, showcasing the diversity and artistic talent that defines the institution. Following the inauguration, the first rounds of committee sessions commenced — marking the beginning of intense diplomatic exchanges and policy-oriented debates.

The evening concluded with a gala dinner and socials at Marena, providing delegates, executive board members, and organizers a chance to unwind, network, and share experiences beyond committee walls. The warm camaraderie among participants truly captured the essence of the MUN spirit — that diplomacy thrives not only in debate but also in connection.

Day 2 & 3: Intense Deliberations and Dynamic Dialogue

The following two days witnessed the committees in full swing. Delegates engaged in five moderated caucuses, working paper drafting, and resolution framing, demonstrating sharp intellect, adaptability, and teamwork. The quality of discussions reflected the participants’ growing understanding of global governance, international law, and national policymaking.

SMITMUN 9.0 hosted five major committees:

  • United Nations Security Council (UNSC): Deliberations on Regional Stability and the Dynamics of Cross-Border Relations in South Asia, with special reference to the recent India–Pakistan border conflict.
  • United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC): Addressing Human Rights Violations and the Protection of Vulnerable Populations in Conflict Zones.
  • Lok Sabha: Discussing Proposed Amendments to the Waqf Board Act to Promote Better Administration and Transparency.
  • Historic Crisis Committee (HCC): Revisiting the Political and Military Turmoil of 1947, allowing delegates to reimagine the decisions that shaped modern India.
  • International Press Corps (IPC): Promoting neutrality, creativity, and analytical insight through journalism, photography, and caricature.

An online committee, ECOSOC, also took place to encourage wider participation beyond campus, promoting inclusivity and global engagement.

Leadership and Collaboration

The success of the event was driven by an exemplary leadership team. The Executive Board featured:

  • Soumojyoti Sarkar (Chairperson, UNSC)
  • Arka Bera (Vice Chairperson, UNSC)
  • Parthajyoti Roy (Chairperson, UNHRC)
  • Chirag Agrahari (Vice Chairperson, UNHRC)
  • Tathagat Ghanshyam Sharma (Speaker, Lok Sabha)
  • Vishesh Agarwal (Deputy Speaker, Lok Sabha)
  • Abhinava Sinha (Head, Caricature)
  • Bhagyodaya Rai (Head, Photography)
  • Pradyut Singh (Head, IPC)

Overseeing the entire summit were Dhruv Bhutra (Secretary-General), Pradyut Singh (Deputy Secretary-General), and Aman Kumar (Director General), whose vision and dedication ensured flawless coordination and execution across all committees and events. With 180+ delegates representing diverse institutions and an estimated 3,500 attendees, SMITMUN 9.0 stood as a testament to the growing culture of youth diplomacy in the region.

Closing Ceremony: Reflections and Farewell

The conference culminated with a heartfelt Closing Ceremony, where the best-performing delegates, photographers, and writers were recognized for their excellence and effort. The ceremony also featured reflections from the leadership team and executive board.

Director General Aman Kumar emphasized, “SMITMUN is not just an event — it’s an experience, a family, and a reminder that every voice matters.” He spoke about the importance of empathy, collaboration, and critical thinking — qualities that form the backbone of diplomacy and leadership.

Deputy Secretary-General Pradyut Singh expressed heartfelt gratitude to the organizing team, describing them as “the unseen force that kept the MUN alive — from planning to execution, from ideation to perfection.”

Partners and Collaborations

SMITMUN 9.0’s success was further amplified by its official collaborators and partners — The Telegraph, Red FM, Dublieu, Model Diplomat, Karmat Masale, Happiness Tours and Travels, and XF Pvt. Ltd. Their support brought professional polish and recognition to the event, contributing to its scale and impact.

A Legacy of Leadership and Growth

As the curtains fell on SMITMUN 9.0, delegates carried home not just awards, but memories, friendships, and lessons that transcend boundaries. From intense committee debates to creative media coverage, every aspect of the summit reflected the SMIT ethos — “Rise, Lead, and Grow.” The conclave reaffirmed that when placed in the hands of youth, diplomacy finds its truest voice — informed, empathetic, and ready to change the world. With passion still resonating across campus, all eyes now turn eagerly toward SMITMUN 10.0, where new stories of leadership and learning will unfold once again.
