EVENT REPORT

Shasya Utsav with Kati Patang (Sub-Event)

The Student Council 2026 of Sikkim Manipal Institute of Technology successfully organized Shasya Utsav, a cultural celebration dedicated to India's rich harvest traditions, with Kati Patang conducted as a thematic sub-event under its banner. The events were held on 11 January 2026 and 14 January 2026 respectively at the Football Ground in offline mode. Together, these celebrations reflected India's agrarian heritage, seasonal transition, and the values of cultural unity, sustainability, and community bonding.

Kati Patang (Kite Festival) – 11th January 2026

As a prelude to the main celebration, Kati Patang was organized as a sub-event of Shasya Utsav to mark the festive spirit of Makar Sankranti through traditional and participatory activities. The event aimed to create an atmosphere of joy and enthusiasm while fostering teamwork, coordination, and social interaction among students.

The programme was organized through the collective efforts of the entire Student Council. A series of traditional games formed the core of the event, including a kite flying competition, lemon and spoon race, and three-legged race. A total of 13 teams participated in kite flying, around 20 students competed in the lemon and spoon race, and 14 teams took part in the three-legged race. Each activity concluded with two winners, ensuring inclusive participation and encouragement. The event was smoothly conducted with the support of student volunteers.

Kati Patang successfully set the festive tone for Shasya Utsav by engaging students in traditional celebrations and strengthening camaraderie across the campus.

Shasya Utsav (Main Event) – 14th January 2026

The main event, Shasya Utsav, was organized to celebrate India's diverse harvest festivals and to promote cultural unity and community bonding. The programme was graced by the esteemed presence of the Chief Guest, Prof. (Dr.) Savitha G. Kini, Director, SMIT. The event was further honoured by the presence of Guests of Honour, Prof. (Dr.) Pankaj Chettri, Associate Director (Student Affairs), Prof. (Dr.) Sangeeta Jha, Associate Director (Academics), and Prof. (Dr.) Chandrashekhar Bhuiyan, Associate Director (Research), along with other esteemed faculty members.

The programme commenced with an inaugural address by the Director, SMIT, followed by an address by the Associate Director (Student Affairs). In her address, the Director spoke on the vital importance of soil as the foundation of life and agriculture. She emphasized the need to protect and preserve soil resources and highlighted how sustainable practices are essential for maintaining ecological balance. She urged students to adopt a sustainability-oriented approach in their daily lives, stressing that responsible use of natural resources is crucial for ensuring a secure and prosperous future for coming generations. Her address inspired the student community to take active responsibility in safeguarding the environment through conscious actions and long-term environmental awareness.

Following the addresses, a ceremonial bonfire was lit by the dignitaries, symbolizing gratitude for the harvest, renewal, and unity.

The cultural segment featured a vibrant sequence of performances, including a song by Aparajita, a Nirvana dance performance, traditional games, vocal and instrumental performances by Chromatix, and a musical performance by Upahar Khanal (Kalyug Band). Students also set up two cultural stalls, and a Matka game witnessed active participation. The programme concluded with a Vote of Thanks by the Vice President.

The combined celebration of Shasya Utsav with Kati Patang strengthened cultural awareness and inclusiveness by highlighting India's agrarian roots and harvest traditions. The events encouraged experiential learning beyond classrooms, enhanced leadership and organizational skills among student volunteers, and fostered a strong sense of unity and belonging within the SMIT community. The emphasis on sustainability further reinforced social responsibility and environmental consciousness among students.

Shasya Utsav, complemented by the sub-event Kati Patang, concluded on a culturally enriching and memorable note. The celebrations reflected the vibrant cultural ethos of SMIT and reinforced the institute's commitment to holistic student development, sustainability, and the preservation of traditional values.
