- The Centre for Distance and Online Education (CDOE), SMU in collaboration with The Institution of Engineers (India), Sikkim State Centre, observed World Telecommunication and Information Society Day on 18th May 2026 at the CDOE Conference Hall, SMIT Campus, Majhitar.
- The programme was organised under the chairmanship of Dr. Kushal Pokhrel, Director (i/c), CDOE, SMU.
- The session commenced with a welcome address by Dr. Kushal Pokhrel, Deputy Director, CDOE cum Honorary Secretary, IEI Sikkim State Centre. In his address, he briefly introduced the theme and significance of World Telecommunication and Information Society Day.
- Er. Lochan Kumar Adhikari, Chairman, IEI Sikkim State Centre and Vice President, IEI India cum Chairman, IE(I) Sikkim State Centre, was present along with Executive Committee members of IE(I) Sikkim State Centre.
- In his presidential address, Er. Lochan Kumar Adhikari highlighted the history and evolution of telecommunication, tracing its journey from early communication systems to the present era of advanced technologies such as 5G communication.
- He emphasized the pivotal role of telecommunications in societal development and digital transformation.
- The keynote address was delivered by Prof. (Dr.) Bikash Sharma, Professor and Head, Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering, SMIT, Majhitar.
- He spoke on “Recent Trends in World Telecommunication and Information Society,” elaborating on the current advancements in communication technologies, along with their advantages, disadvantages, and the challenges faced by today’s generation.
- His insightful presentation was followed by a fruitful interactive session, engaging participants in meaningful discussions.
- The programme was attended by members of IEI, faculty, and staff of CDOE, Majhitar, reflecting active participation from the academic and professional community.
- The master of ceremony for the event was Dr. Bijetri Pathak, Assistant Professor, CDOE, who ensured the smooth flow of the programme.
- The programme concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Mr. Partha Debnath, Assistant Professor, CDOE, expressing gratitude to all dignitaries, speakers, and participants for their contributions to the successful observance of the day.
